July Updates
Monday 1st August 2011

Blimey - August already! Just a few site updates from July, not previously covered.  Firstly there's some recently added Go! Team posters on the Posters page including this really nice one from 2006 here and a photo I'd thought  I'd lost of a bus stop in Mexico here. No really.  Plus  there's a few additions to the discography - Simian Mobile Disco's 'Live in Japan' album that includes live remixes of 'Ladyfash' and SMD's 'It's The Beat' featuring Ninja on vocals here and a rare Japanese promo CD of the same album here - and lastly an odd EMI Music Publishing promo CD entitled 'White Label 005' from 2005 featuring 'Bottle Rocket. Check it out along with other notable compilations here. For a full Go! Team discography go here

'Sonic Investigations Of The Trivial'
Wednesday 3rd August 2011

In honour of its 13th year of releasing records, Memphis Industries has put together a nice mix tape of tracks from the label, to listen to or download, via the NME website here. Interested to see what Go! Team track had been included, I checked it out and found it was their version of Sonic Youth's  'Bull In The Heather', which was released on the b-side of 'Grip Like A Vice'  back in July 2007. However, during the summer of 2006, a random promo-type CD of 'Bull In The Heather' started doing the rounds (item here/info here) which I had put on my iPod straight-away and listened to a fair bit at the time. So when checking out the version on the NME site  yesterday I noticed that the promo version and the subsequently-released b-side version are different. Firstly, the promo version has a four beat drumstick count-in underneath  the opening squal of guitars, whereas on the b-side version this has been replaced with a single echoey bass drum. Secondly...well there is no secondly I'm afraid - I couldn't hear any other differences. Nonetheless I was delighted to discover this tiny bit of trivia. Strangely, my wife seemed reluctant to share in my excitement and suggested I get out more.

YNot & Ignition Festivals
Thursday 4th August 2011

Another two UK festivals for the band this weekend - a headline  appearance at the Y Not? Festival tomorrow night (Friday) and their Saturday evening slot at Newcastle's Ignition Festival. Wishing festival folks a splendid weekend...

Ignition Off
Thursday 4th August 2011

The Ignition Festival in Newcastle this weekend has been cancelled. There's a bit more info here - commiserations to the band and anyone planning on going. Y Not  is still on, however this is a weekend-ticket only event - there are no day-tickets on the gate - and the weekend tickets appear to have now sold out.

London
Tuesday 9th August 2011

Lots of love and best thoughts to all Londoners affected so badly following the third and worst night of rioting. One of the many groups of businesses hit last night were independent record labels - the above photo is of the Sony Distribution Centre in Enfield which housed the stock of a number of independent labels including Memphis Industries. More Information here. Our very best to the chaps at MI. Our very worst to the vermin scum of London.

Edit: Memphis are left only with the stock in their offices. Visit their store here and make like it's Record 'Label' Day.

Message From Memphis Industries
Wednesday 10th August 2011

Issued by the label 9th August:

'Hi there

For those of you who are unaware, on Monday night Pias' (our distributor) warehouse was burned down, taking with it the stock of many fine indie labels great and small. With around 90% of our stock having been warehoused there this obviously has implications for us in the short term. What we can say is that we will be repressing and getting our physical distribution in the UK and Eire back up and running as soon as is humanly possible.

In the meantime what stock we have left is available for sale at our online store, and of course all our catalogue is still available digitally. Now would be a really good time to fill in those gaps in your Field Music collection, or get the Dutch Uncles album you always meant to buy. Remember, right now it's pretty much all limited edition:

Memphis Store full of ltd edition CDs and Vinyl

However, as Londoners born and bred, we also wanted to say that it is a massively sad to see what is happening in our city, and our hearts go out to all the people who have lost homes and livelihoods in the course of the last three nights.'

Matt and Ollie Memphis

Label Love
Thursday 11th August 2011

Following Monday night's fire that destroyed many independent labels' stock at the Sony distribution centre in Enfield, London, a campaign called Label Love has been set up to provide support to many of the labels affected. Read up further on the campaign in this article here (which also contains Twitter links), support wherever you can - and spread the word!

Elsewhere - thanks very much to skip128 for tracking down a surreal remix of Apollo Throwdown by Dam Mantle - and I managed to get hold of a Japanese promo issue of Funanori's EP - chuffed!. Check them out here
and here.

Extra Curricular Kaori
Monday 15th August 2011

The Go! Team's Kaori Tsuchida has contributed vocals and guitar to a couple of tracks released by two bands - Skibunny and Now. Neither appear to be recent releases and I have to say I wasn't aware of either until doing some Discography updates over the weekend. The Now album was released on Pickled Egg Records in 2009 on which Kaori sings and plays guitar on a track called 'Hiway Code'. More information about the band and release can be found here. The Skibunny album Hugs, released in 2010, includes a track called 'All In This Together' on which Kaori provides vocals.  Further details about each album can be found in the 'No! Team' section of the Discography here.

What's Going On
Tuesday 16th August 2011

The Go! Team's Sam Dook is involved in organising a workshop for a friend, Yuri Landman, who 'builds weird and wonderful experimental instruments' and has made them for such bands as Sonic Youth, Melt Banana and dEUS (see above photo). The workshop will be held in Brighton on the 22nd and 23rd of October. Check out the band's Facebook page here for more info. Sounds really interesting. Quite literally.

A quick reminder that Memphis Industries' summer sale is still on with a whole heap of bargains available at a time when support is very much needed. Check out the Go! Team store here for some splendid deals on vinyl, CDs and T-shirts etc.

And Happy Birthday Chi - hope you're having a great day!

Festivals
Wednesday 17th August 2011

Two more festival appearances for the band this weekend. Tomorrow night (Thursday) at Pukkelpop in Belgium and Saturday at the Highfield Music Festival in Germany.

Going Back To Your Roots
Thursday 18th August 2011

Going back to November 1997, Ian Parton and his brother (and future Go! Team co-producer) Gareth were both in a band called Slot Jockey and around this time they released a single called 'Sister Root'. In retrospect, what was interesting about this release was the liner notes on the inside sleeve which contained the phrases 'feelgood by numbers', 'audio assault course' and 'the power is on' a good few years before The Go! Team would use them as titles. Thanks to the eagle-eyed Mr Mike Courteau yet another Go! Team reference from these notes has been spotted. The line 'the story is true, it just hasn't happened yet' appears on both the Slot Jockey sleeve and in the lyrics to 'Ready To Go Steady', released some 14 years later! Check out the sleeve notes here and do let us know if you spot any others. Nice one Mike!

And talking of Gareth Parton, it struck me the other day that this fansite has not included a great deal about him over the years, for which I can only apologise. I was going to put together a short biography of his work both with The Go! Team and the numerous other bands he has worked with, however all this information is duly covered in his own website and a couple of interviews he's given - so instead here's some links (available in future via the Discography Notes section) which I hope will go some way to redressing the balance.

Pukkelpop
Thursday 18th August 2011

The Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium at which The Go! Team played earlier today has been hit by a freak storm which caused stages and other structures to collapse. The band and crew are apparently all safe but sadly there have been several people killed and many injured. There's a couple of news links here and here. Pukkelpop organisers have also issued an information number +32 (0)11 239 711. Very sad news - my thoughts and best wishes to everyone affected.

Kaori Collectables
Tuesday 23rd August 2011

Loving the Yumi Yumi album as much I do, I was chuffed to find out (somewhat retrospectively) that Kaori's pre-Go! Team band had also featured on a split 7" back in 2003 - a limited edition, numbered pink vinyl single released on the GoJonnyGoGoGoGo label. A big thank you to Phil at Norman Records (www.normanrecords.com) for putting me in touch with Jonny, the chap who originally released the single - who, in turn, kindly sold me both the original single and a white label test pressing of it! Spendid chaps - cheers both! Check out the above single in a bit more detail here.

And, intrigued to hear them (and for completist purposes), I also got hold of a regular and promo CD of the Skibunny album 'Hugs' and the Now album 'Ooodipoomn' both of which feature guest appearances by Kaori, which I covered last week (the Kaori-sung track 'All In This Together', on Hugs, is definitely the highlight of the bunch). Check out all Kaori's extra curricular releases and those of the rest of the band via the relevant page of the Discography here

A couple of intriguing Go! Team oddities coming up later in the week...

Sony Go! Team Rarities
Wednesday 24th August 2011

I recently got in touch with a chap who was doing some clearing out of stockrooms on behalf of Sony Records. In amongst the many records and CDs he was going through were a few Sony 'in house' Go! Team items dating back to the time when the band were signed to Sony/Columbia in the States circa 2005. I've bought a few items off him - the first of note is an amazing live recording of the band's entire show at Lee's Palace in Toronto on 14 July 2005 (the date on the CD cover is presumably the mixing date). The CD is ace quality, a great performance and includes the Universal Speech stylee intro the band were using around this time. Why this wasn't given some sort of proper release lord only knows. Not much else to see except this cover and a hand written disc, which state's 'Rik Simpson Mix'. I've stuck it in the Miscellaneous section of the Discography here if anyone wants a proper look. Hopefully more to follow soon.

Playing Away
Sunday 28th August 2011

While we much prefer The Go! Team together, the band have been involved in a number of side projects and earlier bands that are well worth noting. While I'm sure it's not exhaustive (although it was pretty exhausting) I've recently been attempting  to revise, update, catalogue and collect all the band members' extra-curricular activities away from The Go! Team, up until now, in the Discography. Not least, this includes 30 different releases alone that Ninja appears on with Simian Mobile Disco. If you're interested (or you really, really like SMD) check out the revised page here. If you're new to the Discography - click the little sleeves to see more images of each item. Anything missing? Please let me know.

'Everybody Freestyle...'
Wednesday 31st August 2011

As John Otway once said 'Cor Baby, That's Really Free'. And this Friday night's Go! Team gig, as part of the Bingley Music Live Festival is, indeed, really free. Check here for further info.
